The Dangers Of Netflix
When Ipswich City Council asked us to help get locals storm ready we knew one thing for sure another generic emergency message wasn’t going to cut it. The community had seen it all before the warnings the checklists the stern voices. And most people They’d tuned out.
So we took a different route. Research showed that binge watching was practically a local sport. People weren’t paying attention to storm safety but they were definitely keeping up with The Handmaid’s Tale Suits and Game of Thrones. That’s when it hit us what if the most dramatic thing you saw this week wasn’t your favourite show but a very clever storm prep campaign disguised as one
We created The Dangers of Netflix a series of animated faux trailers styled like the shows everyone was already glued to. Think Game of Storms Suit Up for Storm Season and Prepare Like a Queen. Each one teased a dramatic and slightly ridiculous plotline but instead of plot twists you got life saving tips like securing loose items or putting together a storm kit.
These weren’t dry how to videos. They were funny bold and super shareable. One animation even launched during Meghan Markle’s royal tour of Australia and clocked nearly 48000 views in its first week. That’s more reach than the council’s past campaigns got in ten.
We didn’t stop at video. We rolled out posters banners and a full suite of static and digital assets. Everything pointed back to practical information hosted on council channels.
The result Locals were talking clicking sharing and most importantly getting prepared. The campaign hit its mark with the people who usually switch off from this stuff. By swapping fear for fun and tapping into pop culture we proved that storm safety can be binge worthy too.
