Most people enjoy a beach without ever thinking about what keeps it there. The Gold Coast Waterways Authority needed an animation explaining the Sand Bypass System, a piece of coastal infrastructure that has quietly protected the Gold Coast coastline for more than forty years. Almost nobody knew it existed.
The Sand Bypass System affects beaches, boating safety, coastal erosion, and the local economy, yet its importance is largely invisible to the public. The challenge was to explain a complex coastal engineering process without overwhelming audiences. Before animation could even begin, the mechanics of the system needed to be fully understood internally. Only once the complexity was properly unpacked could it become simple enough to communicate well.
Cartoon-style illustration, simplified visual metaphors, cute boats, moving sand, and coastline transitions brought the system to life without turning it into an engineering lesson. The visual style stayed light and approachable. The core message was simple: the Sand Bypass System quietly keeps the coastline healthy. Without it, beaches erode, boating channels become dangerous, and the Gold Coast loses part of what makes it work.
Improved awareness among residents, beachgoers, schools, tourists, and local communities. Invisible infrastructure finally made visible, and a strong addition to the Gold Coast Waterways Authority communications portfolio.
